Maybe that's why this has become one of my favorite films of all time.
Watching Adam Goldberg deal with some of the same foreign travel problems and relationship issues that torture him throughout this movie. It is definitely to your advantage if you don't speak French, because a key plot element is how Jack (Adam Goldberg) becomes so regularly frustrated by not understanding the language.
In the end, I think I loved this movie because it is one of the best love stories I've ever seen.

Their trip to Venice didn't really work out, - they both came down with gastroenteritis. But the combination of Marion's overbearing non-English-speaking parents, flirtatious ex-boyfriends, and Jack's obsession with photographing every famous Parisian tombstone and conviction that French condoms are too small, only adds fuel to the fire. When asked why she edited the film herself Julie Delpy said that, because of budget constraints, it was a choice between either hiring an editor or an editing bay.
Since an editing bay was the more essential item, she took on the role of editor out of necessity.
